Service Learning (Community Service Hours)
Service-Learning Criteria and Information

To graduate from Simeon Career Academy all students are required to have 40 service-learning hours.  Each student should obtain at least 10 hours per academic year, until graduation.  This will ensure that you graduate "on-time" with 40 hours of service-learning credit.  Service-Learning is part of the "Non-Credit Requirements" for graduation.

To ensure proper application of your hours you should always follow these steps:
  • Become familiar with the information provided by Chicago Public Schools.
  • For Parents:  Click on the "Parent" section on the left-hand side to access more information.
  • For Students:  Click on the "Student" section on the left-hand side to access information about what service-learning is and how you need to plan for obtaining your 40 hours.

2.  Find an organization that is "non-for profit":
  • Go to the service-learning website and click on the "Service Agencies" link located on the left-hand side of the page.
  • Next, click on the link "navigate through the database" (located in the 2nd paragraph - 1st line).
  • Once you click on the link the website will redirect you to their database of service-learning agencies.  You can search by Name, Zip Code or Area.
    • If you do not choose an agency from the list provided by CPS you are responsible for finding out if the agency is "non-for profit".
    • It is recommended that you ask your counselor or Ms. Dunson (located in the bookroom).

3.  Obtain service-learning sheets to fill out:
  • Please fill out the following forms located on the bottom of the page.
    • Service-Learning Agency Information
    • Service-Learning Pre-Service Preparation
    • Service-Learning Student Form
  • You may also see your counselor for the proper sheets

4.  Talk to counselor about what place you are going to work for and obtain "Time Sheet":
  • Once you have filled out the proper paperwork you will then need to go to your counselor to discuss what type of work you will be doing and where you will be working.
  • If all of the information fits the criteria then you will obtain a "Time Sheet" to record your hours worked.

5.  Record hours worked at service-learning placement:
  • Once you have all of your paperwork you will need to go to the workplace and record all of your hours worked.
  • You will need to get your supervisor or boss to sign the "Time Sheet" in the proper place to ensure hours are entered correctly.

6.  When finished working turn-in all papers associated with service-learning project:
  • When you are finished working at one place you will bring all of your paperwork to Ms. Dunson.
  • DO NOT TURN YOUR PAPERWORK INTO ANYONE BUT MS. DUNSON

Service-Learning DOES NOT just mean "volunteering" but rather volunteering for a non-for profit organization.   If your student has any questions whether or not their hours will count toward service-learning please see your counselor.
